Events: 2009 Wisconsin Charter Schools Conference: Mini Conference Descriptions

School Performance Mini Conference

This mini conference will engage with teachers, administrators, and superintendents to delve into the practices behind highly performing schools and the current research on leadership in schools.  This mini conference will focus on how a very successful school functions day to day, how effective leadership at all levels can influence school performance, and how school design can be changed to allow these practices to happen.

Monday Morning                                                                                  10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Decision making for High Performance

In this session a team from Milwaukee College Prep will guide participants through effective day to day practices including how to use formative assessments to drive curriculum decisions, how to inform purposeful lesson planning and how to guide fluid decision making to create a positive and productive school.

Lunch Keynote Speaker

Tim Miller, Executive Director of School Leadership, Kenosha Unified School District

Kenosha has some of the best performing Charter Schools in the State. Tim has been instrumental in the creation of some of these schools and in the support and development of all of them. Tim, a former basketball coach at the college level, including Stanford University, understands the impact of leadership on school performance.

Monday Afternoon                                                                                           1:45 to 3:45 p.m.

Leadership for High Performance

We define leadership as shared problem solving, and examine leadership for learning in the context of high performing schools. In the first half of the session, researchers from UW-Madison share a model of leadership developed from a five year study of effective school leaders, and provide tools and examples of leadership for high performance through an interactive case study approach.  In the second half of the session, leaders from the Sheboygan Area School District bring practical examples of how they have worked to institutionalize opportunities for innovation and excellence through Charter Schools.  Both presentations include examples, suggestions, and processes that you can use in your school or district to build leadership for high performance, and highlight potential roadblocks you may face along the way.

Tuesday Session                                             10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

School Design for High Performance

Based on the previous day's sessions, this session will focus on the need to develop school designs and learning approaches that are different in fundamental ways from the schools we have today in order to accommodate new decision making and leadership models. Together we will discuss why we need to develop these different kinds of schools and brainstorm what some of the features of these different schools might be. The session will also discuss some strategies for creating these kinds of schools.
